Hospital drugs: why and how much are we throwing away?
At the interface of clinical, medico-technical and logistical processes, the hospital drug waste circuit is multi-professional. Whether or not your hospital is a C2DS member, join the collective action!
Collective action
Healthcare professionals are taking responsibility and action!
The C2DS Pharma Club is a community of 201 hospital pharmacists. In April 2024, they decided to take action to reduce medication waste. "Medicines in hospitals: why and how much are we throwing away?" is a national survey to assess and reduce waste from medicines (DIMED). Launched in November 2024, it is aimed at health and medico-social establishments with a French PUI.
This project is co-constructed, co-developed and co-supported by RESOMéDIT, which brings together the 14 OMéDITs in mainland France and the French overseas departments and territories.
The national 2025 survey closed on March 16. You can leave your e-mail address at wiebke.winkler@c2ds.eu to receive the national report by mid-June.
The participation kit remains online : Survey "Medicines in hospitals: why and how much are we throwing away?" - C2DS/RESOMEDIT - OMEDIT Ile de France .

The challenges
Reducing medication waste in hospitals has many co-benefits:
FINANCIAL
The CNAM "charges et produits" report forecasts savings of $425 million on drugs in 2025.
CARBON
Medicines account for a major share of a hospital's greenhouse gas emissions.
ENVIRONMENTAL
Pollution of the environment by active pharmaceutical ingredients is increasingly well documented, as is that generated by waste incineration.
This on-site action raises awareness among hospital staff involved in the medication circuit. Measuring to reduce waste re-instills common sense into organization and professions.
