Titanium dioxide, banned in food, now authorized for use in medicines

The C2DS Pharmacy Club, in collaboration with the association Avicennassociation, is launching a survey of hospital pharmacists.

The genotoxic potential and doubts about its toxicity in the colon have prompted Europe to ban this white colorant (E171), a raw powder with a large proportion of nano-sized particles, from foodstuffs in 2022.

Titanium dioxide remains authorized for use in medicines for the time being, but the European Commission has paved the way for a ban that could come into force as of 2025.
