Impact CO2: an innovative toolbox to raise awareness of carbon footprints
Quentin Dubois, Head of Deployment at ADEME, was invited to C2DS to present Impact CO2, a state-owned startup incubated at ADEME's Ecological Transition Accelerator.
What is Impact CO2?
Impact CO2 is a free toolbox for anyone wishing to raise awareness of carbon impact in their community. The startup offers several tools that can be easily integrated into any website, blog or application. Simulators calculate the impact of 11 themes: transport, digital, food, fruit and vegetables, furniture, and so on. This makes it easy to calculate your carbon footprint on a daily basis.
We also offer infographics to illustrate and easily communicate our impact, as talking aboutCO2 is not easy for everyone. All our data comes from ADEME's empreinte database, we also communicate the correct orders of magnitude for carbon impact, and we support professionals in making the best use of our tools."
What are your flagship tools?
The transportation carbon simulation tool calculates theCO2 footprint of a distance or itinerary according to 17 modes of transport, including carpooling. The carbon comparator, meanwhile, translates a figure into carbon using an everyday item. For example, 100kg ofCO2 represents90 fish meals or 34,000 km by TGV. This carbon comparator generates almost infinite equivalences. TheCO2 detector, a new tool, detects a CO2 figure in an article and highlights it, generating a small label displayed above it and giving a comparison. For example, 100kg of CO2 is equivalent to almost 14 round-trips from Paris to Berlin.
How successful are your tools?
Impact CO2 has already logged over 400,000 uses of its tools. In May, the startup passed the million-visit mark on its website. The aim is really to provide support, by giving the right orders of magnitude to communicate to as many people as possible. We popularize theCO2 footprint by providing illustrations that everyone can relate to. With small, everyday gestures, we can really reduce our carbon footprint and reduce France'sCO2 impact.
